My Introduction

About Me
Tristan holds a Masters of Music degree from the Yale School of Music where he studied with Tai Murray. Tristan graduated from the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University with a BM and PDSP in Violin Performance, and also graduated with a BA in Chinese. Tristan is Suzuki Certified. Based in New York City, Tristan is an active performer and violin teacher with a full-time studio comprised of students of all levels. This balance of teaching, performing, and studying of non-musical pursuits is what Tristan believes should be the aim of every musician, to be a well-rounded and flexible member of society.
Me as a Teacher
My role as a teacher is holistic and wide ranging including 1. Treating the student as an individual with specific technical, musical, and emotional needs 2. Providing constructive criticism in training the student’s technique and ear, refining their sense of touch, feel, and hearing, always with positive reinforcement 3. Lifting the student up and helping their confidence! What’s music without joy and fun? 4. Demonstrating what to do, how to do it, and most importantly, why 5. Preparing the student in becoming their own teacher and most importantly 6. In the spirit of Shinichi Suzuki, teaching them to be fine musicians so that they become fine people
My Teaching Style
In addition to emphasizing patience and discipline, I adapt my teaching style to the needs of my students. Every student has unique learning styles, strengths, and areas of improvement, and it is essential for me to find a flexible approach that ensures effective learning. I tailor my teaching style to create an engaging and supportive environment. I employ various strategies such as targeted etudes, music analysis, and assignment of specific pieces depending on the student's needs and preferences. I also aim to create a safe and inclusive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, expressing their opinions, and participating actively in the learning process.
