My Introduction

About Me
Matt Robinson has been an active freelance upright and electric bassist in the Sacramento Metro Area since 2001, where he plays with many of the area's top artists. He holds music degrees from Humboldt State University (Bachelor of Arts, Double Bass Performance Emphasis, class of 1998) and Sacramento State University (Master of Music, Double Bass Performance Emphasis, class of 2003). He is also member of Capital Jazz Project, a Sacramento-Based non-profit organization. Matt has served as an adjunct faculty member at Sacramento State University, Sacramento City College, and American River College, teaching courses in music theory, jazz improvisation, music appreciation, rock and roll history, and jazz combos. Additionally, Matt has taught numerous private bass students both in his home studio and for American River College and Sacramento State University. Matt is now a full-time instructional assistant in the music department at American River College. He is excited to be in this new role that gives him the opportunity to interact with great students and faculty members on a daily basis.
Me as a Teacher
Matt has a relatively laid-back style and he typically customizes lessons to fit the needs individual students. He strongly believes in assessing students, giving the students what they need to develop and grow, and ultimately teaching the students how to practice and how to teach themselves, and eventually how to teach others.
My Teaching Style
Matt is comfortable teaching both upright bass and electric bass in a variety of styles including jazz (all types), rock, classical, blues, folk, etc. He tends to customize private lessons to the needs of the individual student, as opposed to having a standard curriculum for all students. However, Matt does like to make sure that all students learn proper technique and a working knowledge of music theory, Areas of specialty include walking bass line construction, improvisational techniques, jazz repertoire development, and French bow technique.

I have had a few double bass sessions with Matt Robinson and he has been very helpful every time. I like his teaching style and I definitely have benefitted from our previous sessions.
