My Introduction

Her performances include solo vocal recitals in the U.S and France, both early music and contemporary ensembles (vocal soloist, vielle, and treble viola da gamba), and choral works under Antal Doráti, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, and Lorin Maazel. In 1981, Robert Ward selected her to premiere scenes of his opera, Abelard and Heloise, singing the title role. She was a violist in the Springfield Symphony Orchestra (MO,) and the Brevard Music Festival Orchestra and Brevard Music Center Orchestra, and occasionally accompanies herself on the vielle.

About Me
I have an MA in Musicology from the Univ of Iowa and a BA in Voice from the Univ of Maryland. A viola quartet scholarship funded two years of my BA at Missouri State Univ. After transferring to the Univ of MD, I focused on voice; however, I continued to play viola in their Baroque Ensemble. I have training in Renaissance and Baroque music from specialists including Max van Egmond, Kenneth Slowik, and Ian Partridge. Before college, Paul Rolland accepted me into his violin studio at the National Academy of Music, associated with the Univ of Illinois. I teach musicology at Texas Christian Univ, am a Subject Matter Expert, and coach high school and amateur chamber music.
Me as a Teacher
My teaching philosophy follows the practical proverb, "Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime." I employ teaching methods that foster critical thinking. Assignments incorporate active learning experiences that include evaluation, analysis, and assessment of information. I also encourage students to assess their own work. My job is to create independent musicians who no longer need a teacher and intelligent listeners who will comprehend the subtle nuances of music.
My Teaching Style
My general teaching style engages students in active learning. I employ small and large group discussions and assignments in which the students work on both individual and collaborative projects that incorporate activities including research, identification, application, and assessment. I provide information in multiple formats and assess how useful these formats are both for the class as a whole and for individual students. On occasion, I have entirely revamped my classroom technique to accommodate the dynamics of a particular class body. My daily goal is that students leave each session with a greater understanding of the course material and concepts than when they entered.

Expanded my Knowledge

Online learning posed a large challenge...but I want you to know that I thoroughly enjoyed your class and what your teaching had to offer. I actually listen to a lot of composers we discussed in class and am interested in attending a symphony concert in person. I feel that my knowledge of sophisticated music has expanded under your guidance. Thanks so much.

Stretched My Musical Knowledge
December 12, 2024 5:53 pm
I want to thank you for a great semester! I was surprised by how much I learned in your class and how challenged I was. Growing up as a musician, I was expecting this class to be a review of material I already knew, but I was very wrong. I learned so many new things and stretched my musical knowledge beyond what I thought was possible in a course for people with no musical background. This class has allowed me to put much more meaning into what my fingers are playing on the guitar or piano, and what I am listening to on the radio. At times I would get very frustrated and stressed because collecting my thoughts to share in class and all of the memorization seemed impossible with my learning disability. However, I am glad this class pushed me beyond what I believed my limits were, and I really grew from this class both as a musician and as a student. Thank you so much
New Appreciation

Thank you for a great semester! I thoroughly enjoyed your class and appreciate that you are one of the few professors who actually got to known me as a person. Music has never been something I had much interest in, but your class has changed how I listen to music and given me a new appreciate for how complex all music is.
