My Introduction
About Me
Julian Cunningham is a professor, vocalist, performer, and director based in the Sacramento, California area. Rooted in jazz, soul, R&B, gospel, and contemporary popular music, his work balances musical depth with broad audience appeal. He earned a degree in Jazz Studies with an emphasis in vocal performance from Sacramento State University, following studies at American River College, and received eight DownBeat Student Music Awards during his collegiate career, including Outstanding Soloist recognition at major jazz festivals. As a performer, Julian has appeared on stages throughout California, the Southwest, the Pacific Northwest, and Hawaii, and is the lead singer for the Sacramento-based funk and soul band Ideateam. Alongside his performance career, he serves as a professor of music and Vocal Jazz Director at American River College, works as a festival judge and clinician, and collaborates with community and church choirs. He is also a voting member of the GRAMMY Recording Academy
Me as a Teacher
As a teacher, I am student-centered, musically rigorous, and deeply encouraging. I prioritize creating an environment where students feel supported enough to take risks, while being held to high artistic and professional standards. My approach blends technical skill-building with historical and cultural context, helping students understand not just how to sing or play, but why the music matters. I emphasize listening, ensemble awareness, stylistic authenticity, and personal expression, guiding students to develop both confidence and musical identity. Above all, I view teaching as mentorship—preparing students not only for performance, but for sustainable, thoughtful careers as artists
My Teaching Style
My lesson and teaching style is adaptable to the individual student. I adjust my approach based on each student’s learning style, background, and goals, while maintaining consistent musical and professional standards. Some students benefit from detailed technical structure, while others respond more strongly to modeling, listening, and guided experimentation. I emphasize trust, encouragement, and accountability, creating an environment where students feel supported but challenged. Regardless of approach, my goal is to help each student develop solid technique, stylistic understanding, confidence, and a personal musical voice.
