My Introduction
About Me
Terry Longshore is a percussionist whose genre-crossing work exhibits the artistry of the concert stage, the spontaneity of jazz, and the energy of a rock club. Based in Ashland, Oregon, he maintains an energetic career as a performer, composer, and educator. Blue Sky Music writes, “Longshore’s understated virtuosity is percussion poetry at its best.” He is Principal Percussionist with the Rogue Valley Symphony and performs with the Portland Percussion Group, Skin & Bones, Caballito Negro, and nationally and internationally as a soloist. He serves as Professor of Music, Artist in Residence and Director of Percussion Studies at Southern Oregon University. Longshore is a Marimba One Vibe Artist, an artist endorser for Black Swamp Percussion, Zildjian Cymbals, Vic Firth Sticks and Mallets, Remo Drumheads, Gon Bops Percussion, and Beato Bags, and is a trained HealthRHYTHMS facilitator.
Me as a Teacher
I believe in music for everyone, and as a teacher I strive to help students identify their goals, learn to practice efficiently, and enjoy making music an integral part of their lives. I enjoy working with students at all levels from beginners to professionals, and my many years of experience performing and teaching help me to build meaningful connections with students. I am a kind, empathetic person who believes inspiration comes in many forms, and I use my listening and facilitation skills to help find successful pathways for my students.
My Teaching Style
I am very adaptive to students of all ages, skill levels, and learning styles. I have worked with hundreds of students from beginners to professionals and of all ages, and I enjoy learning about each of them and making connections with them through music. I have certain tried and true approaches, but I am always learning how to best facilitate each learner's style and strengths/weaknesses. My current studio is very diverse and includes middle school, high school, university, retired, neurodivergent, and visually-impaired students. I also give group workshops to a variety of communities.
