About Me
My first name is Vahl, but I go by my middle name "Scott'. I am a Sacramento-based drummer, focusing on the classic jazz sounds exeplified by Elvin Jones, Tony Williams, etc. Although I first studied classical percussion, I became immersed in jazz in the early 1970s through the Stan Kenton residence workshops, under the tutelage of Peter Erskine, Ramon Lopez, and Gary Hobbs. I have played and recorded with numerous local and international artists, such as Barry Finnerty, Hugh Ragin, Dave Bass, Jessica Williams, Riverrun, Herb Jeffries, and many others. Sight-reading and artful interpretation of big band charts is a particular passion of mine, and I play frequently in several big bands including the Cunha Band, Herdin'Cats, the SacPops Road to Big Band, and I was the jazz ensemble drummer in every school and university I ever attended. I also have a PhD in Computer Science and have been a college professor in that field. See my website: scottgordondrums.com
Me as a Teacher
While I was in college, I taught several days a week at a local music store, for about five years. After that, I continued to teach a few students at my home. Over the years I have taught hundreds of students, many of whom are now professional musicians and educators. For example, one student that I had for two years is now the chair in a college music department and a leader in the Percussive Arts Society. I have a special emphasis in helping students who wish to succeed in auditioning for their college jazz ensemble, which requires confident sight-reading and chart interpretation skills, and stylistic big band sound. Being THE drummer in your school's jazz band is your launch pad!
My Teaching Style
I am a believer in developing strong fundamentals - reading, rudiments, independence, etc. However, I also believe in helping students develop their own style. For example, my students learn to transcribe by writing out solos played by great drummers, and then compose their own ideas as part of the transcription exercise. For more advanced or older students, my lessons are highly tailored to students' goals. I am only interested in taking students who I feel could benefit specifically from my experience and teaching style - it is important for students to find a "good match" in a teacher. Knowledge and Experience
May 15, 2025 8:37 pm
Though The C4E Website and mentor system I was able to collect fruitful sessions with a very experience musician in my city. Scott's knowledge and experience on or off the kit with jazz and sub factions is a big player in pushing at least my own musicianship a long reach from where I began. As a Drummer and Percussionist I have been playing for 5 years. In the past part of jam session friend groups, institution's gigging Band, and College Combos. Half the time of which was from a proper music teacher and the other self-taught. Though credited for my roots and current fill of playIng only in the past 6 months has Scott almost doubled my arsenal for playing. He's approachable ability to articulate thoughts between him and the student, encourage creativity and develop skills that are applicable anyway are wise. And he's a good addition to a room to make time fly. I recommend any musically inclined person reach out beginning, intermediate, or seasoned.
Real Life Music Experience

Scott Gordon brings first hand, real life music experience to anyone he happens to cross paths with. He is always eager to share and help any one of any age that is willing to find growth. His knowledge of music (recording, performing, history or gigging) makes you less limited after any interaction with him.
Kind and Dedicated

Scott has had a major impact on my 11-year-old daughter Annabelle’s developmental growth, both personally and as a percussionist, helping her become a confident and prominent member of the Citrus Heights Community Marching Band. His kindness and dedication make each lesson something she truly looks forward to, and watching him perform with elite musical groups has been a great father-daughter bonding experience. In just a year and a half, her skills have grown considerably, far beyond her age, earning respect from her mostly adult peers in the local community band that she has been participating in for the past 3 years.
Diligent and Focused

As my first drum-set teacher, Scott Gordon - a fine jazz drummer himself - inspired my young teenage self to develop a strong work ethic through diligence and focus on fundamentals. He was the first mentor I recall who encouraged me to pursue my dream to be a professional musician. Associate Dean of Music, Fresno State University and Past President of CA Percussive Arts Society (CA-PAS)
