About Me
I am Assistant Professor of Applied Brass at Mount Allison University, and have been teaching online horn lessons since 2015, helping multiple students get into Universities as music majors. I have experience teaching students ages 9-75 and I emphasize practical advice to help them improve and reach their horn playing goals. I also received my Doctorate in Horn Performance at the prestigious Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University. An accomplished international chamber musician, I have performed with Volante Winds at the prestigious Fischoff Chamber Music Competition as well as being featured the Juneau Jazz and Classics Festival and the Jeju International Wind Ensemble Festival.
Me as a Teacher
I view teaching as a fundamentally collaborative activity, with the teacher and student engaging in dialogue, asking questions, and posing problems that we work to solve together. I believe that optimal results are achieved when students are met as equals and my emphasis is on carrots instead of sticks. I balance having high standards and expectations while I support and encourage students to maximize their musical potential. My aim is for students to leave their lessons eager to get into the practice room and work on the breakthroughs they just experienced.
My Teaching Style
All students have the right to a teacher who treats them with patience, respect, and consideration, and is dedicated to helping them reach their potential. In my teaching, we pose “why” questions in addition to “how” questions, as well as placing a strong emphasis on fundamentals of tone production. As a teacher, I am greatly influenced by Arnold Jacobs and Dale Clevenger. I urge my students to concentrate on their desired musical product and always exaggerate so the audience can understand their intent.

Supportive and Helpful

Our son has been taking Horn lessons from Mr. Olivier for a year and a half (our son has only been playing horn for that amount of time) and loves it. Olivier doesn't just teach notes, he always takes care to foster musicality in our son. He has supported and helped our son prepare for All-Districts and Youth Symphony auditions where our son has secured first chair in both. We truly believe our son would not be this successful without Mr. Olivier's guidance. If you are interested in growing musically while mastering this beautiful instrument, he is the teacher for you! Always finding new pieces, and warm-up exercises to keep our son excited! Thank you Mr. Olivier. Parent

Fantastic instructor. There are not sufficient superlatives to describe his musicianship, patience, dedication, commitment, and ability to share his enthusiasm for this wonderful instrument. Student Mount Allison University
Patient and Pleasant
July 17, 2024 8:24 pm
Olivier has without a doubt helped my daughter improve in ways that I (as a former French Horn player) could not. He is patient and pleasant as well as intelligent. Most importantly he has given my daughter the necessary tools she's needed. He doesn't just say "play higher" or "do it again". Instead he tells her exactly HOW she can get better and exactly WHAT techniques she needs todo to improve. I have seen a noticeable difference in 8 lessons and look forward (to) her future success with Olivier. Parent
